Council History

Our council was established in June of 2004 and held its first official meeting on 1 July.  The majority of charter members transferred from the Father Lesch Council 7667.  With the support of Father Roy Marien and a lot of hard work by the district deputy and a committee of Knights, the council has become a reality.  Our Council is now 117 strong and growing! We continue to work hard to establish ourselves as a charitable fraternal organization within the Christ Our Redeemer community. Awarded Star and last year Double Star Council under PGK Len Casey and PGK Ron Rabiansky.

Grand Knight’s Column

I have been fortunate over the last several weeks to attend and participate in several events with other Knights that clearly illustrated the Unity and Fraternity within our organization.  Please avail yourself to the strength of character and commitment to Knights of Columbus.

Our Membership Drive several weeks ago showed many Knights working to evangelize our efforts to other potential future members.  The responses from potential members and their spouses and children continue to show the positive reputation our KofC council is held up to.  Other than the normal, “I have limited time”…., there were very few non-positive comments. The message is getting out there, as you Knights are making a difference.

Secondly, I participated in a rosary and service for Our Lady of Victory in Crestview’s pastor, Father O’Connor on Friday night 2/16/2007.  We had 5 different Assembly’s supporting the Honor Guard duties, with over 40+ Knights in regalia.  The reverence and support of the Knight’s during this solemn event in the Panhandle of Florida was overwhelming to the community and to our priests and the bishop.

Finally, I was extremely proud to be a part of the 4th degree ceremony with 9 of our Brothers took on the title, “Sir Knight” of the 4th degree Assembly in Tallahassee February 3rd.  With over 150 Knights and many spouses together for a weekend of celebration to the commitments from our Catholic gentlemen, the entire event was well delivered and the 9 men from Christ Our Redeemer Council #13527 made us proud.  Please congratulate Sir Knight Mike Kramer, Sir Knight Marc Fornier, Sir Knight Rich Pearson, Sir Knight Eric Fick, Sir Knight Alex Connors, Sir Knight Jack Starr, Sir Knight Brad Alvadj, Sir Knight Jay Cockrum, and Sir Knight Phil Fralix when you see them.

God Bless all of you,

Tim Stapleton

Abortion Clinic Report- 2 February 2007

Report made by Dave Halupowski. Friday is the day abortions are performed at the Ninth Ave. clinic in Pensacola. The weather was cold and damp at 9 AM that day. Two other Sir Knights had been there since 6 AM. I introduced my self to my fellow knights and noticed a camcorder filming us from the clinic grounds. The clinic escorts, of who are ACLU members were eyeing the new face. As I was talking, a lady across the street was taking down our license numbers and said she would tow our vehicles if they were not moved. Mark told the lady she was discriminating against us and why did we need to move. We were parked in a strip mall lot that could hold 500 vehicles that had only 50 in it. Almost immediately a Police car arrived. Mark talked with the officer. I moved my vehicle to the Wal-Mart parking lot and purchased a warm shirt.  The officer had told Mark, he had no authority to tow his vehicle. Meanwhile, the escorts had moved the camera and I smiled and gave them a wave.

Just as Sir Knight Walton knelt down on the sidewalk to pray the Rosary, an escort came up to him immediately and started a conversation. He got real friendly asking how he was and other chitchat. His actions were to stop him from praying. (How the devil hates The Rosary!)

Just then the policeman stopped the busy traffic on Ninth Ave and Mark yelled out “Look he is leaving” and a black sedan with tinted windows sped off, the abortionist crouched over with his hands covering his face. As he passed Mark yelled out “stop killing babies”!

We moved back to the entrance of the clinic with another Pro-life worker there, and we prayed the Sorrowful Mystery followed by the Joyful Mystery in honor of that day’s feast of the Presentation. The next was to be a Chaplet of Divine Mercy but I was shivering from the cold by now and excused myself. I had a 200-mile drive to do that day for the Fourth Degree exemplification and I might have started to feel warm by the time I passed DeFuniak Springs going to Tallahassee.

Insurance Corner

A wise man once told me that time surely flies in the life insurance business. Without doubt, time flies for you, our fraternal leaders, as well. Even though our fraternal year is not yet half over, June 30 will be here before we know it. Since we all have our sights set on the Star Council Award, now is the time to work towards that goal. The purpose of my column in this issue is to remind you of the wonderful opportunity we have to help our Order grow, and to offer a couple of suggestions on how we can best do that.

The month of February is our membership recruitment campaign. Now is the time to follow through with all interested prospective members we spoke with.  Let’s make them members during March.

I can help, not only in explaining to prospects our outstanding insurance products, but also on the many other benefits of joining the Order.  Even better, I can help you feel more comfortable in making the membership “sale” yourselves.

Call Sid Howard today to discuss these needs. He wants to hear from you.

Saint of the Month

Apostle Matthew, also known as Levi, was a Jew who worked for the Roman occupying force as a tax collector. Because of this profession, and because many tax collectors extorted money to improve their own fortune, Matthew was regarded by his people as a sinner. When Jesus personally called this sinner to be one of his closest followers, he definitely made a statement.

From the Gospel of Matthew it is written, “As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.” Matthew (9:9).

Jesus saw Matthew, not merely in the usual sense, but more significantly with his merciful understanding of men.  This following meant imitating the pattern of his life - not just walking after him. Saint John tells us: "Whoever says he abides in Christ ought to walk in the same way in which he walked."

There is no reason for surprise that the tax collector abandoned earthly wealth as soon as the Lord commanded him. Nor should one be amazed that neglecting his wealth, he joined a band of men whose leader had, on Matthew's assessment, no riches at all. Our Lord summoned Matthew by speaking to him in words. By an invisible, interior impulse flooding his mind with the light of grace, he instructed him to walk in his footsteps. In this way Matthew could understand that Christ, who was summoning him away from earthly possessions, had incorruptible treasures of heaven in his gift.

There is little known about the life of Matthew other than what is reported in the New Testament. The date he was born is not known and neither is the exact date of his death. Tradition holds that he was martyred while evangelizing in Ethiopia.

February 2007 Knight of the Month

The Knight of the Month for February is Steve Sadowski. He has been a faithful and diligent Knight for thirty years and a 4th degree for twenty-three years.

He is a Past Grand Knight and presently serves as treasurer of our council. Steve is the Color Corp Commander, serves on the 1st degree team as the Grand Knight, works pasta night and is a cook at Holy Name of Jesus Friday Night Bingo. He also works with the Christ Our Redeemer Men’s Group and is a charter member of the R.O.M.E.O.s. Steve also helps Vince Warsheski with aid to seniors and military families. He has helped with putting up storm shutters, repairing home items and cutting grass for some of our seniors.

Steve was born in Newark New Jersey, served in the Army during the Korean Conflict, worked for and is retired from the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He and his lovely wife Marta have been married for 51 years; they have three daughters and three granddaughters. He is an avid golfer and enjoys bowling and an occasional card game.

February 2007 Family of the Month

Family of the month for February is Adam and Sarah Dieterich.  Adam and Sarah are both locals raised in Fort Walton Beach area.  After finishing school in Tallahassee Adam moved back and took a position with Carr, Riggs, & Ingram, LLC as a paraprofessional analyst working with small business owners in the community. Adam and Sarah married and eventually moved to the Blue Water Bay community in August 2005 and registered at Christ Our Redeemer in late October 2005, after being married.

Sarah teaches piano and also does occasional music jobs for weddings and provides recording help for people.  Sarah is known well as she plays between 2 to 5 weekend Masses each month and fills in for funerals and Holy Days as needed.  The last two years, she has accompanied the combined Christmas choirs for COR and HNJ at Niceville High School and Adam sang with the combined choir in 2006.

Adam and Sarah have a long family history with the Knights of Columbus.

Adam’s grandfather is a 4th degree in Cleveland, OH; his brother is a 3rd degree in Wisconsin.

Sarah’s brother-in-law is a 3rd degree stationed at Warner Robbins, GA, and her father-in-law is a 3rd degree w/4444 in Fort Walton Beach.  So they have a real connection to the Knights.

They expect their first child in June and are very excited about starting a family.

They are also heavily involved in chastity-education in the diocese w/a group called Chastity, Inc.  They make presentations to 12-14 year olds and their parents on the Catholic Church's teaching on chastity and John Paul II's Theology of the Body and do additional segments on communications and peer pressure.  They have been featured twice in the Florida Catholic.

We are very proud of their involvement with our Parish and KOC Council.  Adam only made his 1st Degree this past September and 3rd Degree in November.  He would have made his 4th Degree this past month he didn’t have 6 months yet as a knight.  They attend most every event at the parish from Lenten soup nights to the parish picnic and obviously all the Knights functions.  They love our Parish and we are very fortunate to have them in the Paris and KOC.
